COMPLETION FOR TRAINING
To get a Commercial Drivers License (CDL), you must complete a training program that includes classroom and hands-on instruction, pass a written knowledge test, and pass a skills test. You will need to meet federal requirements, such as passing a DOT physical, and ensure your training provider is on the FMCSA's Training Provider Registry if you are a new CDL applicant. The process also involves obtaining a Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) and studying your state's CDL manual.
BEFORE YOU START
- Get your state's CDL Manual: Read the manual to understand the specific requirements and state laws.
- Determine your CDL class: Decide on the type of vehicle you want to drive, as there are different classes (A, B, and C) and endorsements.
- Meet basic requirements: You must have a valid non-commercial driver's license, be at least 18 years old, and pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical to get a medical card.
TRAINING & TESTING
- Get a Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP): After passing the written general knowledge test, you'll get a CLP, which allows you to practice on public roads with a licensed driver.
- Complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT): As of February 2022, all new CDL applicants must complete a federally mandated ELDT program from a provider on the FMCSA's Training Provider Registry.
- Learn the skills: Training covers basic vehicle controls, driving on city roads and highways, low-speed maneuvers like backing and parallel parking, and pre-trip inspections.
- Pass the skills test: This final test includes several components, such as backing, pre-trip inspection, and on-road driving maneuvers like turns, lane changes, and braking.

Career Skills

Mastering driving techniques ensures you can handle various road conditions confidently. Safety awareness helps you navigate potential hazards and prioritize your well-being and that of others on the road. Lastly, effective communication is key for coordinating with dispatchers and fellow drivers, ensuring smooth operations and fostering a collaborative work environment
License Benefits
Obtaining a CDL (Commercial Driver's License) opens the door to a wealth of opportunities in the transportation industry. With a CDL, you can access a variety of job roles, from long-haul trucking to local delivery services. This not only enhances your job prospects but also leads to higher earning potential compared to many other careers. Additionally, as the demand for skilled drivers continues to grow, having a CDL can provide you with job security and a stable career path.
